“Esimene Mõte” is a comics zine organized by me. The idea is to offer a periodical, self sustaining platform for comic artists in Estonia. This is something I had been wishing would exist here. When there is a constant local outlet for the artform then perhaps it will inspire more people to try out creating comics!

So far I’ve been running it at a pace that’s manageable for one person to organize and finance. That makes it one issue per year.

The goal of the design and the name Esimene Mõte (First Thought) is to communicate that doing the thing and feeling the energy is what is important. It’s also motivating for myself!

Information about the open call is shared online via social media and with posters around Tallinn and Tartu.

For the first issue, I drew various characters inspired by the thought bubble. The sad looking dog with starry eyes stuck with me and I’ve kept it as a logo for the project.

Each issue has around 15 artists.

Besides animation and illustration, I’ve worked as a desktopper and created booklets. This background has been very handy when making the actual book.

I’ve created a website and a Substack and am happy about the Discord server initiated by enthusiasts. To stay visible, I also post on Instagram. This is why I’ve created these fun animations, based on the poster illustrations, to get noticed in peoples feeds.
